Tag digital assets with AI

February 20, 2020

As someone who has been in the digital asset management (DAM) industry for quite some time, I clearly remember the days of people asking, “So if I type ‘dog’ into the search bar, will your software return all the images of dogs in our collection?” At the time, the answer was twofold, “Yes… but only if you tag all the photos of dogs with the keyword, ‘Dog’.” But now, thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI) tagging, that answer has evolved into a simple, “Yes.”

Artificial Intelligence has been a game-changer for DAM, especially for smaller organizations without a team of people with the time to sit down and tag their entire collection with metadata keywords. Now simply importing assets into the system will provide your team with a wealth of data to search upon.

By utilizing AI tagging, images can automatically be tagged with keywords. Any landmarks or  logos in your photos can be identified and searched. Even the emotion of people in the photos can be captured, as well as the number of people in your photos. Another helpful tool is the ability of AI engines to index any text in your images. Easily search for street signs or billboards in your photos and quickly drill down to the image you’re looking for.

While AI is very beneficial from a time and cost savings perspective, often the keywords provided are not a suitable replacement for teams that need a detailed taxonomy. Teams that deal with large amounts of stock photography are a great fit for using AI tagging.
