A DAM Good Replacement for Canto Cumulus!

Written by NetX | August 12, 2022

Canto, a digital asset management vendor, will be ending support for its on-premise editions: Cumulus Entry, Cumulus Workgroup, and Cumulus Enterprise. This leaves existing Canto Cumulus customers in search of a new DAM solution to manage digital collections and workflows.

Fortunately, NetX has partnered with the leading Cumulus integrators from across the globe to tackle every aspect of migrating your DAM assets and metadata from Cumulus to NetX!

If you’re looking for a reliable Canto Cumulus alternative, you're in the right place.

What’s happening with Canto Cumulus?

In 2021, Canto Software announced the end-of-life of the Cumulus on-premise digital asset management system, signaling the permanent discontinuation of support, maintenance and development of the product. Canto announced that they will end support for Cumulus on the following dates:

  • Cumulus Entry and Workgroup editions end date: Dec. 31, 2022.
  • Cumulus Enterprise edition end date: Dec. 31, 2023.

Until these dates, Canto states it will continue to provide bug fixes but will not provide new feature enhancements. If you have been using Cumulus Entry, Workgroup or Enterprise, these end dates mean you will no longer have access to support and there will be no feature enhancements after these dates.

“Can I still use Cumulus after support ends?”

Yes, your Cumulus system will continue to work, but you won’t have any support from the manufacturer, to diagnose issues or accommodate system changes. If you have problems with your technical environment or experience a bug, you will be left to your own devices. For many organizations, going forward without support is not an option. Generally, existing customers will seek to migrate to a new DAM platform before the Cumulus end of life dates.

What’s the best Cumulus alternative?

Choosing the best Cumulus alternative requires a bit of internal research, namely: evaluating your current usage and priorities (workflows, data, integrations etc.) across teams.

Cumulus was released in 1992, and had a particular approach to organizing assets and data, as well as integrating workflows and automation. Because of this, you will want to assess your environment before making a choice on a new DAM.

For a comprehensive assessment, look to the experts: there are many experienced Cumulus integration partners who understand all aspects of the software, and can help with assessing the best way forward.

The digital asset management vendor landscape is vast, so going into a migration process with your priorities defined will be a big advantage.

Why is NetX a smart Cumulus alternative?

NetX has been chosen by many Cumulus experts as the preferred destination for their Cumulus clients. Yes, we're a bit biased here, but our teams have spent the past year working with Cumulus clients and integrators around the world, to plan for customer migrations to NetX.

This work has led to a network of Cumulus experts becoming NetX Partners. In addition, our partner network has developed a Cumulus-to-NetX migration tool to allow for expedited transition of Cumulus assets and data into NetX.

Some of the worlds largest brands and innovative organizations have relied on NetX for many years. We’re confident NetX represents a powerful upgrade and replacement for Cumulus, and that most Cumulus users can easily switch to NetX due to our Partner expertise, ease of use and planning for the migration process.

How to migrate from Cumulus

Generally there will need to be a “translation” of functions between Cumulus and new DAM environment. Any DAM migration can be complex and time-consuming, and the Cumulus catalog migration can be a bit challenging.  But it's doable! You'll want a general plan to replicate your current functionality (catalogs, permissions, metadata, users, workflows and integrations). Also, this is an opportunity to learn about new possibilities. Allow time to determine new ways of approaching your collections and workflows, and discovering new features that may benefit your teams.

The first step is to reach out to a Cumulus Expert in your region who can develop a specific Cumulus Migration plan.  Our expert Partners can help you assess Cumulus usage and priorities, and determine what features you will want/need in the new system.

And, if your priority is to keep your existing customizations and integrations, our Partners can help with this as well! With our helpful and supportive onboarding, we’re committed to successful Cumulus DAM migration you’ll be good to go.
